Position Summary
Reporting directly to the BAL PR & Communications Lead, this position will support and execute BAL’s communication strategy and efforts across the continent. This position will be responsible for securing consistent, positive media coverage of everything the league is doing in Africa, writing high-quality internal and external-facing documents, building relationships with top-tier African media, and supporting the league’s business lines in Africa.
This individual will be a highly organized self-starter with strong written and verbal communications skills, the ability to multitask while effectively prioritizing, and to be self-sufficient to work autonomously while on location at events.
Major Responsibilities
- Provide support to all BAL communications needs across both business and basketball development, including press releases, key messages, Q&As, and executive remarks relating to partnerships, grassroots events, social responsibility initiatives, consumption metrics, expansion, new projects, etc.
- Support and execute communications strategy for the BAL working with senior leadership and relevant NBA departments in New York and around the world.
- Pitch and secure consistent, positive media coverage in priority African media outlets across a range of verticals, including sports, business, technology, consumer, health, and wellness, lifestyle and news publications.
- Oversee on-site media operations for all BAL events and announcements, including logistics, media attendance/relations, credentialing, executive briefings, and event/press conference management Propose ideas proactively for media pitches to stimulate media coverage.
- Secure strategic media placements assisting corporate reputation and business goals.
- Support framing and development of key messages for BAL spokespersons prior to media interviews.
- Prepare speeches, talking points and varied communications materials.
- Identify speaking opportunities and improve awareness of the BAL.
Required Skills/Knowledge
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Exceptional writing and communication skills Multidimensional communications team player with the ability to develop and implement multifaceted PR strategies in a variety of markets simultaneously.
- Self-starter who is also able to engage, listen and collaborate with multiple internal departments to deliver cross-team solutions.
- Ability to meet tight deadlines.
- Self-motivated, dedicated and driven to achieve results.
- Deep knowledge and expertise of the African continent.
- Strong network of high-profile African media contacts and relationships.
- Basketball knowledge, experience
- Fluent in English and French
Experience Required
- Minimum of five years of experience in PR/Communications.
- Proven track record of developing and executing market-based communications strategies as well as building and growing a brand while working with multiple internal and external stakeholders.
- Experience in crisis communications|Education
Educational Background Required
Bachelor’s degree in PR, Communications, Marketing or related discipline required
